Granola is an excellent snack to enjoy with dairy-free yogurt, fruit, or even by the handful. The great thing about granola is that you can truly take a recipe and tweak it to make it your own. If you’re gluten-free, use gluten-free oats. If you’re grain-free, use puffed quinoa or millet instead of oats. Plus, you can even make granola in a skillet, too! The key to perfect granola is to find a happy medium between your wet and dry ingredients so you can get the crispness and clusters that you’re looking for.

1. Start Making a Few Batches to Practice

This is the main secret to perfect granola, and it might take a few batches for you to get used to how the granola cooks in your oven and what level of crispiness you like. Plus, each oven is a bit different, so don’t be afraid to make a few batches that don’t turn out great, and try again! As you figure out what you like, you’ll start to get the hang of how you like your add-ins and what your granola mix will look and feel like before it goes into the oven. Be unafraid of burning your batch or not getting it to the crispiness you want; you’ll find your groove after a few batches!

2. Tweak the Recipes for What You Like

If you’re not a fan of coconut flakes or dried fruit in your granola, leave it out! Granola should be something you enjoy, and you don’t have to recreate your favorite in-store flavors. It can be sweeter, crunchier, or even have something surprising in there such as sunflower seeds or nutmeg. Feel free to think out of the box to find your perfect creation.

3. Find Your Perfect Ratio

The best thing about making your granola is that you can make it exactly how you want. If you like more crunchy clusters of oats, add a few fewer additions to your granola or bulk up a bit more on the oats. Playing around with the ratios allows you to figure out what textures you want and how you like to eat your granola.
