It was an ordinary morning in Livonia, Michigan, just before the Fourth of July weekend. Jamie Lee had already left for the day and her husband let their two chihuahua mixes into the yard before work. A short time later Lucy’s littermate, Yuki, started howling. The family found Lucy covered in blood and unable to walk. Her injuries were catastrophic for a small senior dog: her snout crushed, bones broken, all of her front teeth gone, and the sight lost in one eye. The family believes she was sniffing under the fence, a habit of hers, when another dog attacked her through it. The attack itself was not caught on camera. Lucy’s emergency veterinary care has cost her family $15,000, and the other dog’s owner has never come forward. Please sign the petition supporting Livonia Police in identifying the owner.

What makes this case unusual is the tone of the person asking for help. Jamie Lee is not calling for anyone to be punished. She has said repeatedly that she is still willing to extend grace to the other dog’s owner, and that she understands why someone might be frightened to come forward: worried about the cost, worried about getting in trouble, worried about what might happen to their own dog. She simply wants them to do the right thing. Her daughter has been having nightmares, and Lee described lying awake unable to believe someone would let this happen and then walk away. That is the whole ask. If you live in Livonia and know anything about a dog kept near a fence line where this happened, Livonia Animal Control can be reached on (734) 466-2655 during business hours, or the Livonia Police Department on (734) 466-2470 after hours. There is a practical point here for every dog owner too. A dog that can reach through or under a fence line can inflict exactly these injuries on a small animal on the other side, and owners are generally liable for it. Check your fence, and if your dog has shown aggression through it, do not leave them unattended there. One Green Planet’s guide on what to do if you suspect animal abuse in your neighborhood covers how to report concerns, and Lucy’s story is reported by ClickOnDetroit.
