At around 5 a.m. on April 21, a security camera on Sun Florin Drive in Florin, California recorded a man walking up to a home, approaching the front door, taking hold of a neighborhood cat, and killing her by punching her repeatedly on the porch. The resident found the footage later, called 911, and reported it to Sacramento County Animal Care Services. County officials called it a horrifying act of animal cruelty. What happened next is the part worth knowing: Lead Animal Control Officer Zoe McCurnin took the case, noticed from the video that the man had arrived on an electric scooter, and reasoned that he probably lived close by. So she went door to door through the neighborhood, asking residents for anything they knew and looking for other home security cameras. That work led to an arrest. On June 2, sheriff’s deputies arrested 30-year-old Adrian Cruz on a felony animal cruelty charge, and the case is now moving through Sacramento County court.
