Petition: A Heat Wave Just Killed Thousands Across Europe. Countries Must Be Ready for the Next One.

The heat wave that gripped Europe in late June 2026 was the most extreme the continent has ever recorded, and one analysis estimates it killed more than 20,000 people in a single week, with the heaviest tolls in France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Scientists with World Weather Attribution found the event would have been virtually impossible without human-caused Climate change, and the World Health Organization warns that “once-in-a-generation” heat waves are now nearly annual. Heat is already one of the world’s deadliest weather hazards, tied to hundreds of thousands of deaths a year, yet many European homes, schools, and hospitals were never built for these temperatures.
