Every year, households across the country toss out perfectly good food simply because a date on the label has passed. That quiet, costly habit adds up to billions of dollars in waste annually and puts an unnecessary burden on both your wallet and the planet. The good news? Once you understand what those printed dates actually mean, you can make smarter, more confident choices at home.

The phrase “Best If Used By” or “Best By” is the most common label you will encounter, and here is the thing: it is not an expiration date. According to the FDA, this kind of date confusion leads consumers to discard food that is still perfectly safe to eat. The FDA only requires a firm “use by” date on infant formula. Everything else? It is largely a quality signal, not a safety alarm.

Food scientists describe these dates as a window of peak nutrition and flavor, not a hard cutoff. After that date, your yogurt might taste slightly different or your condiments may separate a little, but that does not automatically make them dangerous. The real warning signs to watch for are changes in smell, texture, or appearance, the kinds of things your senses will pick up on naturally.

The USDA encourages people to follow the storage instructions printed on packaging, whether that means keeping something frozen, refrigerated, or in a cool dry spot, since proper storage is one of the biggest factors in how long a product stays fresh and safe.

California is stepping ahead of the rest of the country with a new law that simplifies food date labels into just two clear categories: one that signals peak quality and one that signals actual safety concerns. The hope is that clearer labeling will cut down on unnecessary waste across the state. Similar federal efforts have not yet gained traction, but this sustainability minded shift at the state level is an encouraging sign of progress.

Until labeling catches up everywhere, trust your senses, follow storage guidance, and remember that a single extra day past a printed date is rarely a reason to throw anything away.
