A new study about high fat dairy and dementia has grabbed headlines, but the bigger takeaway still points toward plant based diets. The research followed nearly 28,000 adults in Sweden for up to 25 years and found a small association between higher intakes of full fat cheese and cream and a slightly lower risk of dementia. According to CNN, experts say the findings should not be read as a green light to increase dairy consumption.
The study had clear limits. Researchers only measured diet at the start, and when they later checked a smaller group, the results lost significance. That weakens the case for any protective effect. Nutrition experts also noted that the benefit appeared mainly when cheese replaced processed red meat. In other words, dairy may have looked better simply because it replaced foods known to harm long term health.
There was no benefit linked to butter, milk, yogurt, or low fat dairy. Some researchers suggested the results may reflect broader lifestyle differences, not dairy itself. Others pointed out that Swedish cheese often comes from grass fed cows, making it very different from processed cheese common in the United States.
What matters most is what this study does not overturn. Diets centered on whole plant foods remain strongly linked to lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline. Plant forward eating patterns Support the environment, protect the Earth, and reduce harm to animals. They also avoid the saturated fat levels that continue to raise concern among public health experts.
Rather than focusing on narrow dairy findings, the evidence still favors a plant based approach built around vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. That pattern supports the brain while aligning with ethical and environmental values.
Choosing plant focused meals remains one of the simplest ways to care for your body, the planet, and the future we all share.
