Buying a robot mower used to mean a weekend on your knees pegging a boundary wire around the entire lawn, then relaying it every time you moved a border or a strimmer cut through it. That requirement has quietly disappeared. Satellite positioning and camera navigation now do the same job from an app in an afternoon, which is the reason this category is worth another look even if you wrote it off five years ago. What has not changed is the thing none of the listings mention and which costs nothing to fix: hedgehogs curl rather than running away, and most of these machines are sold with overnight schedules.
Obstacle detection is the robot mower specification that matters most and it is not sold that way. A machine using bump sensors discovers an obstacle by hitting it, which is fine for a plant pot and not fine for an animal. Vision and LiDAR systems identify objects before contact, and while none are trained to recognise a curled hedgehog specifically, a mower that stops for an unexpected object stops for more things than one that does not. Product safety regulators set no standard for wildlife detection at all. Pay for the better sensing and then still mow in daylight, because the sensing is a backstop rather than a solution.
Navigation has genuinely changed. The old generation needed a perimeter wire buried around the lawn, which took a weekend and had to be redone whenever the garden changed. RTK satellite positioning and visual mapping have replaced that on most current machines, and the setup is now an afternoon with an app. Worth checking how the RTK signal reaches the mower: some brands need a separate antenna with clear sky, while WORX delivers correction data over the internet instead.
Then look for a subscription, because this category has started acquiring them. Segway advertises lifetime free network RTK on the X-series and WORX states there is no additional cloud cost, which is worth confirming on whichever model you are actually buying rather than assuming it applies across a range. A positioning service you rent is a strange thing to discover after spending a thousand pounds on a lawnmower.
Finally, be realistic about whether your garden suits one. EcoFlow publishes an unusually honest list of disqualifying conditions: lawns over roughly 6,000 square yards or under 120, more than 40 percent shaded by trees, large glass or metal walls nearby, and separate lawn areas not joined by a path at least 3.3 feet wide. Most brands leave you to discover these yourself.
Up to an acre, four-wheel drive, and slopes to 84 percent, which is the specification that separates a machine for a real garden from one for a flat rectangle. No antenna to site, no clear sky needed for a base station. The WORX Landroid Vision Cloud pulls commercial-grade RTK correction over the internet, which removes the hardware most rivals need and the placement headaches that come with it. Four-wheel drive, an acre of capacity, 84 percent slopes, cut-to-zero edge trimming and front-wheel steering that turns without tearing the turf. Roughly $1,600 to $2,200. EcoFlow tells you when not to buy it, which is rare enough to be worth rewarding. The EcoFlow Blade covers about 0.7 acres wire-free with GPS route planning, RTK obstacle avoidance and anti-theft auto-lock, and takes an optional sweeping kit that collects leaves and debris as it goes. Around $1,300 to $1,900. Its published limitations are the reason it is here rather than a criticism, but read them properly: heavy tree cover or a garden split into unconnected sections will defeat it, and both are common. A quarter acre is what most suburban gardens actually are, and paying for an acre of capability is money spent on nothing. The Navimow i110N combines RTK with visual SLAM so it keeps working where satellite reception is poor, which matters under trees and beside buildings, and runs at 58 decibels with multi-zone scheduling. Typically $800 to $1,200. It will not handle the steep slopes or rough ground the X430 manages, so measure your gradients honestly before choosing on price. Check availability.
The old technology is cheaper by a factor of three or four, and for a simple rectangular lawn it still works. This wire-guided model covers around a quarter acre on slopes to 45 percent, once you have spent an afternoon pegging a boundary wire around the edge. Usually $500 to $800. The wire is exactly the compromise it sounds like: it must be relaid if you change a border, strimmers cut through it, and its obstacle detection is bump-based, which is the sensing type this article has just argued against. Set daylight hours and never schedule overnight. This is the single most important thing on this page. Hedgehogs, toads, newts and slow-worms are active from dusk, and a machine running at 2am is operating precisely when the garden is busiest. Daytime mowing removes most of the risk at no cost to you whatsoever.
Walk the lawn before each run, particularly in spring and early summer when young animals are around and least mobile. It takes a minute. Wildlife gardening guidance is consistent that a corner left unmown does more for garden biodiversity than anything else available to a householder, and it also gives small animals somewhere to be that is not the path of the mower.
Let the clippings lie, which these machines do by default and which turns out to be the real environmental argument. Cuttings are fine enough to fall between the grass and decompose, returning nitrogen and moisture to the soil, so there is no bagging, no green waste collection and less watering. Set against a petrol mower, which the EPA regulates as a meaningful source of emissions, the case makes itself. A robot mower is a genuine improvement on a petrol engine and a genuine hazard to small animals, and both of those are true at once. The machines are getting better at seeing obstacles and none of them can see a hedgehog that has decided to become a ball. Until they can, the fix is a scheduling setting anyone can change in thirty seconds, and it is worth more than any sensor on the specification sheet.
