A power station rated at 1,152 watt-hours does not give you 1,152 watt-hours. In independent bench testing this year, one popular unit returned roughly 47 percent of its stated capacity when running a low-wattage load, which is worse than several cheaper rivals in the same test. The same machine then went on to beat everything else in the room on a large appliance. Both results are real, and between them they explain why the number printed on the front of these things is close to useless on its own.
Match the unit to the load rather than to the headline. A fridge, a CPAP machine and a laptop draw very different currents, and inverter efficiency changes with each of them. Testers found the EcoFlow Delta 2 outran the Anker C1000 by over an hour on a low-wattage grow light while losing on large appliances, which is exactly backwards from what the spec sheets suggest. If you are buying for a medical device or a fridge during outages, the low-wattage figure is the one that matters and almost nobody publishes it.
Battery chemistry is the second thing and it is genuinely simple. LiFePO4 lasts several thousand cycles where older lithium-ion managed a few hundred, tolerates heat better, and is markedly less prone to thermal runaway. Everything recommended below uses it. If a listing does not say, assume it does not have it, because any manufacturer paying for LiFePO4 puts it in the first line of the description.
Solar input is where the category name gets tested. A unit that accepts 200 watts of panel input takes most of a day to refill from sunlight; one that accepts 500 watts does it in a few hours. That difference decides whether you have bought a solar generator or a large battery that happens to have a solar port, and the gap between the models below is more than twofold.
Then there is the thing nobody selling these will tell you. They self-discharge in storage. A unit bought for hurricane season and left in a cupboard from March will not be at 100 percent in September, and emergency preparedness guidance assumes your equipment works when you reach for it. Testers also found on-board displays drift, with one machine shutting down while still reporting two percent remaining. Put a recurring reminder in your phone for every three months.

What Anker took away to get there is worth knowing: this generation drops the expandable battery port the original C1000 had, so you can no longer add capacity later. The Bluetti AC180 carries 1,152Wh, 1,800W continuous, four AC outlets, a five-year warranty and 0 to 80 percent in 45 minutes from mains. Around $700 to $900. This is also the unit that returned about 47 percent efficiency on the low-wattage bench test and weighs 35 pounds, noticeably more than rivals. Jackery rates this one to retain over 70 percent of capacity after 4,000 charge cycles, which works out at roughly a decade of weekly use. The Explorer 1000 v2 holds 1,070Wh, delivers 1,500W with a 3,000W surge, weighs 23.8 pounds, and can be pushed to a full charge in an hour through the app while defaulting to a gentler 1.7 hours to protect the cells. The EcoFlow Delta 3 switches to battery in around ten milliseconds when mains power drops, fast enough that a desktop computer or a router never notices, which is the specific reason to choose it over anything else on this page. 1,024Wh, 1,800W, LiFePO4, full charge in 56 minutes, 140W USB-C. Around $500 to $700. EcoFlow’s app has historically been the weak link, and if the unit sits somewhere without reliable wi-fi you will be using the physical buttons more than you expected. The previous generation, still sold, and in one specific respect the better machine. The original SOLIX C1000 takes an expansion battery to reach 2,112Wh, accepts 600W of solar, charges fully in 58 minutes and carries a five-year warranty. You give up the 49-minute charge time of the Gen 2, which matters far less than the ability to double your capacity later, and this is the one to buy if you are not certain how much power you will end up needing. Work out your actual draw before deciding on size. A fridge pulls around 140 watts, a CPAP 30 to 60, a laptop 60, a phone 20, and Energy Star appliance data will give you a figure for anything else you are worried about. Add up what genuinely has to keep running during an outage and you will usually find a kilowatt-hour is plenty, which is a cheaper answer than the internet tends to give.
Charge it every three months whether or not you have used it. This is the single most important sentence in this article and it appears in no advertisement anywhere, because a power station that self-discharged over the summer is functionally a heavy plastic box when the storm arrives.
Keep it somewhere temperate. Battery degradation research shows lithium chemistry loses capacity faster at both temperature extremes, so a garage swinging from freezing to baking is the worst place in the house for it despite being where everyone puts theirs. None of this makes a solar generator a green product in itself. It is a lithium battery with an extraction footprint and a difficult end of life, and buying one because it has the word solar on the box is not an environmental decision. What it can genuinely replace is a petrol generator, which is loud, emits directly, and kills people every year through carbon monoxide poisoning when run in enclosed spaces. Measured against that, the argument holds. Measured against not owning one, it does not.
