Medical marijuana has long been framed as a gentle alternative to prescription drugs. Many people believe it offers relief without serious downsides. However, a large new review suggests that the story is far more complicated, especially when it comes to pain, sleep, and long term health.

According to Futurism reporter Sharon Adarlo, a team of psychiatrists analyzed more than 15 years of medical cannabis research, covering over 2,500 clinical trials published in JAMA. Their conclusion was sobering. Medical marijuana showed little evidence of helping patients with acute pain or insomnia, two of its most common uses. Even more concerning, nearly 29 percent of people using medical cannabis met the criteria for cannabis use disorder.

That finding challenges the idea that marijuana is always low risk. While many patients seek relief, the review found a wide gap between public perception and scientific evidence. High potency products were linked to a higher risk of psychosis, and daily smoking was associated with heart issues like heart attacks and strokes. These risks raise serious health questions that deserve honest discussion.

There were some limited benefits. FDA approved cannabinoids showed modest success in reducing nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy. They also helped some people living with HIV or AIDS maintain body weight. Still, these narrow uses look very different from the broad claims often made by the cannabis industry.

This debate matters beyond individual choice. Public policy around legalization shapes how substances affect communities, the environment, and public trust in science. A sustainability lens asks us to value prevention, transparency, and long term wellbeing for people, animals, and the planet.

As interest in alternative medicine grows, evidence based care should guide decisions. Choosing a balanced lifestyle that supports personal wellbeing, a plant based diet, and respect for Earth helps build a healthier future for everyone.
