A recent study suggests that regular marijuana use may impair working memory, potentially affecting safety, communication, and job performance. Working memory allows people to retain and use short-term information, which is crucial for daily tasks. Joshua Gowin, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz School of Medicine, provided an example: When driving, a person must remember what they saw in their blind spot to make safe lane changes. Similarly, during conversations, the ability to recall what was just said is essential for meaningful interactions.

The research, published in JAMA Network Open, analyzed data from over 1,000 individuals who had varying levels of cannabis use. Participants underwent brain scans and cognitive tests between 2012 and 2015. Findings showed that chronic users—those who had used marijuana over 1,000 times—exhibited a 14% reduction in brain activation related to working memory compared to non-users. This decline appeared to be associated with long-term cannabis use rather than recent consumption.
While the study highlights a strong link between marijuana use and memory impairment, it does not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Carol Boyd, a professor emerita at the University of Michigan, noted that cannabis users have long been described as forgetful, but it remains unclear whether memory function can fully recover after extended periods of abstinence. She pointed out that the study did not control for factors such as ADHD, which also affects working memory.
One unanswered question is whether chronic users can regain their cognitive abilities after quitting. Some studies suggest that temporary abstinence may lead to partial recovery, but more research is needed to determine long-term effects. For now, the impact of heavy marijuana use on brain function remains an active area of study.
