The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation — the AMOC — is the vast conveyor belt of ocean water that carries warmth from the tropics into the North Atlantic. It is the reason northern Europe is habitable at the latitude of Labrador, and it shapes rainfall for billions of people. It is also slowing. Research published in 2026 found the AMOC weakening at four separate latitudes over the past two decades, and estimates suggest the circulation has already lost roughly 15 percent of its strength since the mid-20th century, as meltwater from Greenland dilutes the cold, salty water that drives the whole system. Scientists disagree about exactly when a full collapse could arrive — published estimates range from mid-century to beyond 2100 — though oceanographer Stefan Rahmstorf has warned that the tipping point, the moment shutdown becomes inevitable, is probably only 10 to 20 years away.
