One of the most important systems regulating our climate, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), may be on the path to collapse if greenhouse gas emissions remain high. The AMOC, which includes the Gulf Stream, acts like a giant conveyor belt that moves warm tropical water north and sends colder water back south at depth. Without it, global weather could become dangerously unstable.
According to a new study in Environmental Research Letters, the AMOC could shut down after 2100, driving harsher winters across Europe, drier summers, and chaotic rainfall patterns across the tropics. Researchers at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research warn that once key tipping points are reached in the North Atlantic, feedback loops may lock in, making the collapse inevitable. Already, observations over the last decade suggest early signs of weakening.
The process is fueled by warming temperatures, which reduce the ability of surface waters to cool, sink, and mix with deeper ocean layers. As this mixing falters, the ocean becomes less salty and less dense at the surface, further weakening the currents. This self-reinforcing loop could trap us in a future where extreme climate shifts are the norm rather than the exception.
Scientists caution that many climate models underestimate the risk because they don’t factor in the extra freshwater pouring into the Atlantic from Greenland’s melting ice. That influx could push the AMOC past its breaking point even sooner. While the complete collapse may not occur until well beyond this century, the warning signs are already flashing.
The lesson is clear: cutting emissions today drastically lowers the chances of triggering this planetary tipping point. Choosing renewable energy, moving toward plant-based diets, and protecting the environment aren’t just lifestyle choices—they are actions that help stabilize the Earth’s systems for generations to come.
