Petition: 125 Dead Dogs Were Hidden in Trash Bags and Inside the Walls of This House

When Georgetown County deputies executed a search warrant at a home in the Wedgefield community of South Carolina on July 9, 2026, they found more than 100 living dogs and 11 cats inside a house so foul that firefighters had to ventilate it before rescuers could safely enter. The home was condemned. Then came the worse discovery: investigators say the remains of 125 dogs were buried or concealed across the property, some in trash bags, some sealed inside the walls of the house itself. Officials believe more than 250 dogs passed through the property, and that the neglect had been going on since at least 2019. Neighbors reported it more than once. At least one welfare check was carried out. The suffering continued for years anyway. Roughly ten of the rescued dogs were so far gone that they had to be euthanized; the survivors came out caked in filth, with overgrown nails and teeth worn silver from chewing on wire cages. The two property owners have been charged with conspiracy, animal cruelty, ill treatment of animals, and improper burial of animals, and a judge has barred them from owning or caring for animals while the case is pending. But that restriction expires with the case. This petition asks the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office for two things that outlast it: a permanent, lifetime ban on owning animals, and mandatory mental health counseling — because neglect on this scale does not appear from nowhere, and a sentence that never addresses the cause is a sentence that risks a repeat.
