The charges tell you how the law ranks it. A man in Cape Girardeau, Missouri was arrested after what officials describe as a rage in which he lashed out at both the people and the animals around him. He killed the family’s pet cat. A young child was there and saw it. He has been charged with abuse or neglect of a child, domestic assault, and animal abuse as a misdemeanour. Few details have been released and the child is not identified, which is right. What can be said is that the animal abuse charge here is a misdemeanour while the charges relating to the child and the partner are not, and that gap is worth examining rather than assuming. Killing a pet in front of a family is not a separate offence that happens to occur alongside domestic violence. Researchers and domestic abuse services have documented for decades that harming an animal in a household is frequently an act aimed at the people watching, a demonstration of what the person is willing to do. Charged as a misdemeanour, it reads as property damage. Charged in the context of everything else, it reads as what it more likely was. He has been charged and not convicted, and is entitled to due process.
