Amsterdam just took a bold step to clean up what we see on our streets. The city has voted to ban meat advertising in public spaces, making it the first capital city to do so. That matters because billboards and transit ads shape what feels normal, especially for kids.

According to ProVeg Netherlands, Amsterdam has already been moving toward a more plant based food culture. In 2021, the city committed to lifting the share of plant based food in local diets to 50 percent by 2030 and 60 percent by 2040. Now it aims for 60 percent plant based protein by 2030. In other words, the timeline got faster.

Meanwhile, ProVeg Netherlands has built a platform that tracks how 190 Dutch organisations are setting targets for the protein transition. That kind of transparency helps. It nudges companies to compete on progress instead of marketing hype, and it gives the public a clear way to follow along.

So why focus on meat ads at all. For starters, eating less meat can Support human health and cut Pollution tied to feed, manure, and land use. It also reduces pressure on animals caught in intensive farming systems. When cities line up food policy with climate goals, they make the better choice easier and more visible.

This is not about shaming anyone at lunch. It is about updating the default settings of city life so they match the climate math. If a city can limit ads for products that harm the environment, it can also invest in affordable plant forward meals in schools, hospitals, and public cafeterias.
