A beloved law-enforcement K-9 named Santi was killed on the Fourth of July after illegal fireworks sent him running into traffic. According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, Santi — a five-year-old Belgian Malinois who had served for four years — was being kept indoors because of illegal fireworks going off nearby. When his handler let him into the backyard, an aerial mortar exploded close by, startling Santi so badly that he jumped the fence and bolted. His handler chased after him, but Santi was struck by a car near Shaw and Helm Avenues in Clovis, California, and died of his injuries. The driver fled the scene. Please sign the petition urging California to crack down on the illegal fireworks that put animals and people at risk.
Illegal fireworks terrify animals, endanger people, and — as Santi’s death shows — can turn deadly in an instant. The petition asks California State Fire Marshal Chief Daniel Berlant and Governor Gavin Newsom to work together on real solutions to curb the use of illegal fireworks. If you have anxious pets of your own, One Green Planet’s 6 Natural Ways to Keep Your Pet Calm on the Fourth of July can help, and you can read more on Santi’s story via World Animal News.
