July 29th is National Chicken Wing Day, also known as National Buffalo Wings Day. Buffalo, New York is believed to be the birthplace of the chicken wing as a desired dish. In the early 1960s, the wings were considered the least desirable cuts of the chicken and were saved for stock. But one night in 1964, the owner of the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY made her son a late-night snack – she deep-fried chicken wings and tossed them in butter and hot sauce. They were an instant hit and Buffalo wings were born. At least, that’s the most popular story and in 1977, the mayor of Buffalo declared July 29th National Chicken Wing Day.

However chicken wings as a dish came about, there is no denying their popularity. In 2013, 27 billion chicken wings were eaten, 1.23 billion just on Super Bowl weekend. More statistics will tell you that is over 100 million pounds of wings and that if you laid out the wings end to end, they would circle the perimeter of the Earth twice!


The statistic you rarely see, however, is that 27 billion chicken wings come from over 13 billion chickens – innocent living beings slaughtered for no reason other than unnecessary food. Chickens that have been genetically modified which causes them great suffering even before they are killed. Chickens are beautiful, smart and friendly and deserve to live their lives in peace.
