When transitioning to a grain-free diet, or simply learning how to master one, you may, every once in a while, be struck with such an intense craving for carbs, that you feel like you’re on the brink of caving. It’s totally understandable. After all, if you used to eat grains on a regular basis, it’s completely normal for you to still get urges for pasta, rice, and things of that sort.

Luckily, as with any diet preference, there is more to it than just a list of foods you can’t have. In fact, there is much pleasure to be derived from learning about all of the new and exciting dishes you can enjoy!  Thankfully for you, the blogosphere has been abuzz with this very topic for years now and has proven that not only is it totally possible to tame your cravings without grains, it’s actually super easy!  Check out these five ways to own your grain-free diet cravings like a champ!


1. When You’re Craving Rice…

Thanks to a lovely little device called a food processor, making rice out of vegetables has become a cinch! Even if you don’t have a food processor, you can easily make cauliflower rice using a boxed grater or simply dicing up the cauliflower yourself. Now, cauliflower rice may not seem like it would be as flavorful or filling as regular rice, but believe us, with a little seasoning and creativity, you will become obsessed with it! That’s right, vegetables like zucchini, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, and carrots, are all capable of being transformed into deliciously tender pasta noodles! This allows you to get the same satisfaction you would from slurping up a bowl of spaghetti, but without the food coma afterwards. Use tahini, olive oil, pesto, coconut oil and milk, herbs, ginger, or any of your other pasta favorites to make your veggie dish as exciting as your pasta one would have been. There are tons of sturdy vegetables that make for great fries, and we’re not just talking sweet potato! Make fries out of eggplant, rutabagas, beets, celery, and jicama. Season with some cilantro, chili powder, a dash of salt, and a drizzle of oil and you have got yourself a snack that feels just as indulgent as the real thing! (A delicious dip helps too.)


5. When You’re Craving Breaded Dishes…

As yummy as steamed vegetables, pan-seared tofu, and sautéed stir-fries are, sometimes the craving for something deliciously breaded creeps up on you. Well, good news, friend! You can still get all of the amazing texture of breading, without any bread crumbs! The most obvious option is using grain-free flour. Chickpea flour, in particular, creates a nice airy yet crispy exterior when fried. Try it in these Tempeh Fish ‘N’ Chips or in this Seitan Steak With Beurre Blanc Sauce.
