Is there anything better than fresh bread? We don’t think so. Especially when you learn how to make it from scratch. Not only is it a rewarding experience that you can feel proud about, but it’s a delicious one as well. Once you’ve tried making your own bread, you will never want to go back to eating store-bought bread. The irresistible warming aroma will fill your kitchen and make the whole experience that much better. Bread is so great because of its versatility.

It can be made savory or sweet, and you can customize it with any toppings you’d like. You can add crunchy walnuts, olives, fresh herbs, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, caramelized onions, and the list goes on. It pairs well with pretty much any dish and can be enjoyed during any time of the year. And don’t worry, you don’t need to be a professional baker to make an amazing loaf of bread. All you need is a loaf pan and a few simple ingredients.

What Bread Is Vegan?

Most bread is typically vegan. The most basic ingredient list calls for flour, yeast, water, oil, salt, and sugar. However, occasionally a few non-vegan ingredients might be hidden in the mixture that you will want to keep an eye out for. Ingredients like eggs, dairy milk, and butter, as well as honey, are sometimes used to modify the texture and flavor. Luckily there are plenty of plant-based substitutions that you can use that are healthier and work just as well. To replace eggs, you can make your own flax or chia eggs. You can use unsweetened plant milk as a replacement for dairy milk and butter in place of dairy butter. Honey can be easily swapped for maple syrup, sugar, agave syrup, or dates. If you’re buying store-bought bread or eating out at a restaurant, you will want to ask to double-check that it is vegan.

Now let’s move on to the fun part!

Gather Your Ingredients

First, you’re going to need a large mixing bowl. Gather your flour, water, dry yeast, salt, sugar, and oil.

Mix Ingredients

Once you have gathered all of your ingredients, you’re going to want to add everything into a big mixing bowl. You can mix by hand or use an electric mixer, which is recommended and will help make the process a little easier for you. Mix until the mixture turns into a dough consistency (approximately 5 minutes).

Knead The Dough

Your dough should now be a little sticky to the touch and not too dry. While you’re kneading the dough, make sure not to add too much flour. This can cause the dough to become very dense, and as a result, your bread won’t rise correctly and have that light, fluffy texture we all love.

Let Your Dough Rise

Start by spraying a bowl with cooking oil to ensure that the dough doesn’t stick. Make sure your dough is nice and round, and place it into the bowl. Add a little cooking spray to the top of the dough to prevent a crust from forming. Cover the bowl with a towel and let it sit for approximately 40 minutes. By this time, your dough should have doubled in size.

Bake The Dough

Spray cooking oil into a loaf pan, and place your dough inside. Cover the pans with a towel and let sit for another 30 minutes. After the time is up, cook at 375°F for approximately 40 minutes in the oven. You’ll know they’re ready when they have fully risen and are slightly golden brown.

As you can see, making vegan bread from scratch is not as intimidating or difficult as it sounds. Feel free to get creative and add your favorite toppings and flavors. Once you’ve tried this recipe, don’t forget to check out our Savory bread recipe archives!
