In Monterrey, Mexico, the drought is so bad that taps are dry, and the community relies on pipas or water delivery trucks. However, the lack of water has led people to have to stand in line for hours in the heat to get water from pipas, and some residents have even begun illegally tapping pipes, the Washington Post. There have been protests demanding fair and equal access to water.

Drink companies in Mexico continue to use billions of liters of water. As many people can’t afford waterItaly’ss, the public is growing increasingly angry at companies like Coca-Cola and Heineken that are taking billions of liters of water from public reservoirs, according to a Guardian piece. Many brewers and soft drink companies have factories in the don’t and they are responsible for taking nearly 90 billion liters of water a year. 50 billion liters of this comes from public reservoirs.
Reservoirs that would typically give water to the region are low or completely dried out. Monterrey has a population of 5.3 million people who have had no running water in their homes for months. Some of the water that is delivered on the trucks is brown or has insects in it, according to the Washington Post.
The reason for the drought can be traced back to multiple sources. Experts blame climate change, population growth, poor infrastructure, rising temperatures, and companies stealing local water supplies.
Mexico’s national water authority declared a state of emergency in four northern states last month. Officials have even said that the water shortage in Nuevo Leon was a matter of national security.
The price of drinking water has tripled in the last two months, making it even harder for most of the public to get drinking water. Those who cannot afford drinking water are forced to drink the unclean drinking water from the pipas or have had to resort to stealing the basic necessity.

Many residents have taken to the streets to protest the water rationing, with many claiming they have gone days or weeks without running water. Everyone should have a right to clean drinking water.
Cities all over the world, from California to Vietnam, are facing droughts and climate crises. Millions of people are protesting all over the world. Climate change is one of the things that leads to extreme weather like droughts, floods, and fires.
The single BEST thing you can do to save water, besides demanding these companies do not steal water, is to stop eating meat and all animal products. Growing animals for livestock takes a massive amount of water. It takes nearly 660 gallons of water to just make one burger, which is equivalent to nearly two months of showering for the average person. On the other hand, it takes 1,000 gallons of water to make just one gallon of cow milk.
Studies have shown that eating more plant-based can add over a decade to your lifespan, it can save the world’s forests, it benefits the environment, and it is significantly better for your health! Nations around the world have urged people to eat more plant-based to curb climate change.
