Intermittent fasting has moved well beyond the realm of wellness circles and into everyday conversation, with millions of people curious about whether skipping meals for extended periods can genuinely transform their health. A simulation video from the YouTube channel Wellness Wise has captured the attention of over 28 million viewers by walking through the remarkable physiological journey the body undertakes when it goes 36 hours without food. The response has been enormous, and it is easy to understand why people are captivated by what unfolds inside them on a cellular level.
According to Bored Panda, the simulation reveals a fascinating progression of metabolic shifts. Within the first several hours, insulin levels begin to fall and the body draws on stored glycogen for fuel. Around the 12 hour mark, the body transitions toward burning fat for energy, a state known as ketosis. By 16 hours, autophagy kicks in, a natural process where cells begin clearing out damaged components and renewing themselves. Growth hormone rises around the 30 hour point to help preserve muscle, and by 36 hours autophagy is thought to reach its peak.
Adam Collins, associate professor of nutrition at the University of Surrey, has noted that extended fasting may Support metabolic flexibility, meaning the body becomes more efficient at switching between different fuel sources. That sounds promising, but the full picture deserves attention too.
Experts caution that the science supporting dramatic long term benefits in humans is still quite thin. James Betts, a professor of metabolic physiology at the University of Bath, has pointed out that many proposed advantages have not been clearly demonstrated in human research. Beyond limited evidence, potential downsides include fatigue, headaches, nutrient deficiencies, and disrupted sleep. A 2022 study from the University of Toronto also found associations between intermittent fasting and disordered eating patterns, particularly among young women.
If you are exploring fasting as a wellness tool, approaching it with curiosity rather than rigidity is wise. Listening to your body, staying nourished, and consulting a trusted healthcare provider can help you make choices that truly serve your long term wellbeing.
