A New Drug Could Help Dogs Live Longer — Here’s What You Need to Know

For anyone who has ever looked into the eyes of their beloved dog and wished for just a little more time, science may be offering a glimmer of hope. A San Francisco company called Loyal is developing a groundbreaking injectable medication known as LOY-001, specifically designed to extend the lives of large breed dogs. While it is not yet available, the possibility of seeing it on shelves by 2026 has sparked excitement among dog lovers and veterinary researchers alike.

Large dogs have always faced a biological disadvantage when it comes to longevity. Unlike their smaller counterparts, bigger breeds tend to age more quickly, and researchers believe a hormone called insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1) plays a significant role in that process. IGF-1 is naturally more abundant in large dogs and is thought to both drive growth and accelerate the aging process. According to ABC News, previous studies have found that dogs with lower insulin levels experienced less frailty and a better overall quality of life, which is exactly what LOY-001 aims to Support.

Rather than a daily pill, LOY-001 would be administered by a veterinarian as a long acting injection every three to six months, making it a manageable part of routine pets care. Studies so far suggest the side effects are mild, mostly limited to temporary digestive discomfort, which is reassuring news for dog owners weighing the option.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has already signaled that Loyal’s data shows the drug has real potential, though full approval will require completing a large clinical trial along with thorough safety and manufacturing reviews. Loyal is aiming for conditional FDA approval by 2026.
