1. Homegrown Smoker, Portland, OR

The Homegrown Smoker, a 100 percent vegan restaurant, serves up comfort food and classic, southern-style barbecue. Their goal is to provide delicious food for herbivores and omnivores alike, and they even offer gluten-free and soy-free options.

One of the most popular items on the menu is the combo plate, which comes with your choice of tempeh ribs, soy curls, tofu, chikm, h’yam, fufish filets, and two sides. It is also served with hush puppies and remoulade — yum! If you are craving ribs, try the rib plate, which uses smoked tempeh ribs, grilled and covered with Homegrown Smoker barbecue sauce. 2. BBQ Revolution, Austin, TX


If you are in Texas,  head over Austin and try out BBQ Revolution, which is the only 100 percent barbecue restaurant in all of Texas. BBQ Revolution uses traditional techniques, which allows them to bring out flavors that they say no vegan joint has been able to replicate. They believe that barbecue doesn’t mean animal products, and that it tastes even better without the cruelty.

BBQ Revolution has a short and simple menu, consisting of some classic barbecue dishes. Try the smokey curls, which are made with soy curls, the tempeh ribs, which are made with organic and local tempeh, or the brisket, made from local wheat. You could also order a plate or sandwich. If you are extra hungry, try the BBQ combo platter, which includes one of every protein and a side, with bread, pickles and onions. BBQ Revolution is in the middle of moving locations, so they are currently closed but should be opening in a few short weeks! As of now, they will be serving both lunch and dinner. The new location will be at 3301 East 5th Street, Austin, Texas 78702.

3. Monk’s Meats, Brooklyn, New York


Monk’s Meats is a vegan butcher shop. They offer catering for events, and set up at Smorgasburg, the largest weekly open-air food market in America every weekend. Their menu consists of modern American comfort food with a healthy focus and a “Brooklyn” vibe.

You can choose from a slider, full sandwich, or a salad. Try the barbecue seitan, barbecue mushroom, jerk seitan, and bulgogi seitan. 4. Brother’s BBQ, Denver, Colorado


Brother’s BBQ is a barbecue restaurant that has five locations as well as a full-service catering office in Denver, Colorado. Although Brother’s BBQ is not a 100 percent plant-based restaurant, they make it easy for plant-eaters since they offer a whole vegetarian and vegan menu!Try the vegetarian brother sandwich, which has a thin layer of grilled and smoked barbecue tofu, and is smothered in a sweet and tangy barbecue sauce, jalapeños and fried onions. Be sure to omit the coleslaw, since it is made with mayonnaise. If you are dining with another person, try ordering the tofu party pack, which feeds two or three people. It comes with one pound of their signature barbecue tofu, two sides that come in two pint containers, and four buns. 5. Nuvegan Cafe, College Park, Maryland


Nuvegan Cafe is a 100 percent vegan cafe, with raw and organic options, and is serving up  barbecue in the Washington, DC area.

This restaurant doesn’t only serve barbecue food. There are many options on the menu for those of us who are craving something smokey and grilled! You could try the barbecue tofu with rice, which is wheat-free, or the vegan barbecue roast with rice, which is soy-free. Try pairing either one of these options with macaroni and cheese and collard greens, and you will be good to go! Nuvegan Cafe has two locations, both located in the Washington DC area. One is located at 8150 Baltimore Ave College Park, Maryland 20740, and the other is at 2928 Georgia Avenue Washington, D.C. 20001. Both are open everyday, and even offer brunch on Sunday morning, starting at 10:00 AM.

6. Moe’s Original Bar-B-Que, Aurora, Colorado

Moe’s Original Bar-B-Que is a small chain barbecue restaurant serving up Alabama style barbecue. Some locations offer tofu, and one of those locations is in Aurora, Colorado.

There are vegan options available on the menu, like a sweet, tangy, melt-in-your-mouth, barbecue tofu. Order it as a sandwich or a plate, and it comes with two sides. The sandwich consists of grilled and smoked tofu, and is topped with barbecue sauce, Alabama white sauce, pickles and slaw. The Alabama white sauce contains dairy, so make sure to omit it to make it vegan (maybe try ordering some extra slaw instead!) For sides, try the side salad, or the marinated slaw. 7. Souley Vegan, Oakland, California


If you are in the mood for great comfort food and barbecue, make your way to Souley Vegan in Oakland California. This lovely restaurant uses locally sourced non-GMO ingredients, and serves 100 percent vegan Southern-style cuisine.

One of the most popular items on the menu is the combination plate, which allows you to combine three of your favorite items, such as vegan macaroni and cheese, yams, barbecue tofu, collard/mustard greens, lentils, southern fried tofu, and biscuits and gravy. You could also order the southern fried tofu minis, which are eight bite size Southern style battered fried tofu served with the house made sauce, barbecue sauce, and hot sauce. 8. Soul Vegetarian No. 2, Atlanta, Georgia


Soul Vegetarian No. 2, located in Atlanta, Georgia, is a 100 percent vegan eatery offering plant-based barbecue dishes. Not only does this restaurant have amazing barbecue food, but it also sells sweet treats made with non-dairy ingredients, as well as fresh juices and teas.

This restaurant’s menu is extensive. You could try the barbecue kale bone twists, the barbecue tofu, or the barbecue cauliflower. Each dish is smothered in their homemade barbecue sauce. You could also get the appetizer with kale bone, tofu, or cauliflower, and pick one of the homemade dipping sauces for on the side! 9. V-Eats Modern Vegan at Trinity Groves, Dallas, Texas


V-Eats Modern Vegan at Trinity Groves located in Dallas, Texas, is a 100 percent vegan restaurant, that makes everything in house (including all the vegans meats, vegan cheeses, and decadent sauces!) Most ingredients are organic and non-GMO, which a menu designed to please both vegan and non-vegan lifestyles.

This popular plant-based eatery has many different barbecue options on the menu, including a classic brisket. You could try the brisket sliders, or the brisket tacos. You could also try the Bar-V-Q brisket sandwich, which comes with citrus pickled red onion and pickles as well as your choice of yucca fries, potato fries, or a chopped broccoli salad with sun dried cherries and sliced almonds. 10. Detroit Vegan Soul, Detroit, Michigan


Detroit Vegan Soul, in Detroit, Michigan, is a 100 percent plant-based restaurant that uses only organic ingredients, natural sweeteners like agave nectar and maple syrup, and uses no hydrogenated oils.

There are many options for barbecue lovers at Detroit Vegan Soul. There are two different locations, that offer different two slightly different menus. For the location in Western Detroit, try ordering the hush puppies as an appetizers, and the barbecue tofu as your entree. The barbecue tofu comes smothered in sweet and tangy house-made barbecue sauce, with a side of corn on the cobb, potato salad, and kale. At the East location, try the barbecue tofu sandwich, which piles on house-made barbecue sauce, veganaise, and coleslaw on multi-grain bread — talk about a food coma!
