After more than three decades on Bay Area television, former anchorman Ken Wayne has taken to the skies—literally—to save lives. Retiring from the newsroom earlier this year, Wayne is now fully devoted to Flying Tails, the nonprofit he founded to transport abandoned, abused, or injured animals across California.
As reported by Kristin J. Bender at Bay Area News Group, Wayne, 63, has completed over 50 rescue flights in his Cessna 182 Skylane. From bear cubs to dogs pulled from kill shelters, and even a bald eagle injured in a territorial squabble, Wayne has quietly built a legacy that’s saving animals one small flight at a time.
One recent mission included Cupcake, a chihuahua flown in from China after surviving shocking abuse. Wayne also rescued Gemma, a Golden Retriever–lab mix once labeled “aggressive” but now thriving at Lily’s Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary in Sonoma County.
Animal advocates praise Wayne’s dedication. Odessa Gunn, founder of Little Trooper Ranch, called him “wonderful,” highlighting the lack of transport options for vulnerable animals. And Alice Mayn of Lily’s Legacy added, “To have a pilot who donates his time and plane is just exceptional.”
Flying is calming for animals, Wayne says—many fall asleep mid-flight, including a 70-pound Gemma curled up beside him. It’s not just logistics; it’s about giving animals peace on the journey to a better life.
Wayne now flies a few times a month, funds missions through donations, and even creates content for Flying Tails’ website and YouTube. “I didn’t change the world,” he said. “But I made it one tiny sliver better.”
If you’ve ever considered supporting animal rescue, now’s the time. Donate, foster, or volunteer—every action helps give an innocent creature a second chance. And maybe, like Ken Wayne, you’ll find your calling in compassion.
