About 40 miles north of Los Angeles is The Gentle Barn, a sanctuary where animals and humans find healing together. Founded by Ellie Laks, who identifies as an “animal communicator,” The Gentle Barn offers a haven for animals that have endured trauma and, in turn, provides a unique form of therapy for people. Laks, who attributes her recovery from depression to the companionship of animals, has made it her mission to rescue and rehabilitate them. The animals that arrive at The Gentle Barn often come from dire situations and have never known human kindness. However, through the use of music and sound therapy, acupuncture, and other holistic treatments like holding and massage therapies, these animals begin to heal.
“Every single week, they blossom. They heal. We can see it in front of our eyes,” Laks shared. Each resident animal at The Gentle Barn has a unique story of survival. Turkeys that were destined for the dinner table now cuddle with visitors, displaying affection and resilience. John Lewis Thunderbolt, a notable resident cow, was saved from a slaughterhouse and nursed back to health by Laks herself, who even slept in her living room to care for him during a severe bout of pneumonia.
Laks emphasizes the profound connection that forms between the animals and visitors. She highlights the therapeutic effects of “cow hug therapy,” explaining, “When we put our faces against the cows, it mimics being an infant with a caregiver. We feel vulnerable and small. We feel protected and loved; it’s magical.”
This unique form of therapy has drawn visitors of all ages seeking solace from their own emotional wounds. Hailey Bonus, a mother coping with the loss of her infant son Wyatt, found remarkable comfort in the warm embrace of the cows. Despite traditional therapy offering some relief, Bonus describes the cow hugs as incredibly powerful, especially poignant as she welcomes a new baby girl into her life. Research supports the healing power of hugs, showing they can lower blood pressure and reduce feelings of anger and loneliness. Bonus felt a shift in her emotional state during her cow hug, an experience she hadn’t anticipated.
Despite skepticism about unconventional therapies like cow hugs, Laks remains confident in their benefits and encourages people to visit The Gentle Barn and experience the connection for themselves. “When you feel that connection with those cows, it does something,” she insists.
While bird flu has been detected in some dairy farms across nine states, California remains unaffected, and the cows at The Gentle Barn are healthy, as confirmed by Laks. The Department of Agriculture and the FDA continue to monitor the situation closely.
