Near Bogota, Colombia, is the Namigni Animal Sanctuary, a refuge for nearly 400 rescued animals. Founded by Miguel Aparicio four years ago in response to the dire circumstances of abandoned animals during the pandemic, the sanctuary has grown to become one of the largest in the Americas. However, today it faces an unprecedented challenge – an extreme water scarcity exacerbated by the region’s severe drought.
With Bogota implementing water rationing measures and the clock ticking ominously, Namigni Animal Sanctuary finds itself on the brink. Miguel Aparicio, the sanctuary’s founder, has initiated preparations for the emergency evacuation of its residents to a new farm with abundant water sources and lush pastures. However, this comes with a substantial financial burden – a daunting $10,000. In response to this pressing need, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched. The campaign aims to gather Support for the crucial endeavor of relocating these animals to safety.
Namigni Animal Sanctuary is home to a diverse array of rescued animals, including over 110 cows and bulls, 20 horses, 50 goats and sheep, 20 pigs, and various other species. Yet, despite their tireless efforts, the sanctuary struggles to secure sufficient Support locally. The looming water crisis, with Bogota predicted to have no water in just 50 days, underscores the urgency of the situation.
The sanctuary’s location in the mountain region of La Calera, which has seen almost no rain in the past 12 months, paints a grim picture of the environment. Climate change is not only affecting human populations but also jeopardizing the welfare of animals in sanctuaries like Namigni.
Miguel Aparicio said, “Despite our tireless efforts, the sanctuary faces significant challenges in securing sufficient Support locally. As the city government estimates that Bogota could run out of water in about 50 days, the urgency of the situation cannot be overstated.”
