Cholera, a disease caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, manifests in severe dehydration and diarrhea, often proving fatal without prompt medical intervention. Although entirely preventable and treatable, cholera predominantly affects the poorest communities who lack access to clean water and proper sanitation, primarily in regions that contribute minimally to global carbon emissions. This disease has been described as an “underreported pandemic,” with significant outbreaks, like those in Haiti from 2010 to 2018, leading to numerous deaths.
Dr. Louise Ivers, an expert on global health, emphasizes that Climate change exacerbates this issue by fostering conditions that disrupt clean water supplies and enhance the proliferation of disease-carrying pathogens.
