In a startling revelation, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has linked an alarming surge in cholera cases across the continent directly to Climate change. This weather-driven health emergency is pushing the limits of Africa’s already strained health systems, highlighting a stark and distressing reality: the continent is facing the wrath of climate change head-on, despite contributing the least to its cause.

Jean Kaseya, the director general of the Addis Ababa-based Africa CDC, didn’t mince words: “Cholera in Africa is a Climate change issue.” From the Democratic Republic of Congo to South Africa’s capital outskirts, floods and adverse weather conditions are compromising access to clean water and sanitation, displacing thousands, and triggering the worst cholera outbreak in three years.
The disease, known for causing severe dehydration through vomiting and diarrhea, is usually treatable with oral rehydration solutions. However, the real challenge lies in the low immunity levels in affected communities, exacerbated by poor vaccination rates and general health conditions. This situation is dire, with the continent needing up to 80 million cholera vaccine doses – a stark contrast to the 15 to 18 million doses available globally.
Countries like Zambia and Zimbabwe are in a vaccine crisis, unable to meet the demand for millions of doses needed to combat the outbreak. The situation in Congo is particularly bleak, with a staggering requirement of 5 million doses and none available.
This cholera surge is more than a health crisis; it’s a clear signal of the broader, devastating impacts of Climate change on vulnerable populations. Africa’s plight underscores a global imperative: addressing climate change is not just about saving the planet—it’s about saving lives. As the world watches, the question remains: Will we act in time to avert further disaster?
