More than a dozen animals were found dead last month during a police search of Happy Tails Rescue, an animal shelter located in the northern Twin Cities metro area in Minnesota, according to a recently disclosed warrant. The Fridley Police Department began investigating Happy Tails Rescue in February after receiving a tip alleging “animal maltreatment” at the facility. This investigation, conducted in collaboration with the Animal Humane Society (AHS), included extensive interviews with both employees and volunteers of the shelter.
On May 21, Fridley police executed a search warrant at Happy Tails Rescue and an associated location in Oak Grove. The search revealed a grim scene: two dead dogs and 13 dead cats were discovered within the facility. Additionally, the warrant detailed that 39 live animals — 25 dogs, 12 cats, a bird, and a guinea pig — were seized from the shelter. However, police noted that a total of 42 living animals were found and subsequently placed under the care of the AHS.
Happy Tails Rescue, a nonprofit organization, describes its mission on its website as being “dedicated to rescuing homeless and abandoned animals.” The shelter claims to work with committed volunteers, foster homes, veterinarians, trainers, and boarding facilities to provide temporary care for rescued dogs and cats until they can be placed in carefully screened, permanent homes.
