If you have ever found yourself watching a viral video of someone treating their dog at home and wondered whether you should try the same thing, you are not alone. Millions of devoted pet owners turn to social media every day hoping to find fast answers for their beloved companions. But veterinary experts and animal welfare organizations are sounding the alarm: those well intentioned clicks could actually put your pet in serious danger.
According to the PDSA, the UK’s leading veterinary charity, viral “hacks” circulating on platforms like TikTok are creating a genuine crisis for animals. Some of the most alarming trends involve encouraging dog owners to give their pets ibuprofen for pain relief. What many people do not realize is that this common household medication is highly toxic to dogs and can cause life threatening complications. Paracetamol poses an equally serious risk to cats.
Veterinary surgeon Cat Henstridge, who reaches over 400,000 followers with her pet care content, emphasizes that no home remedy or social media tip should ever be acted upon without consulting a qualified vet first. She points out that herbal and holistic treatments popular online range from simply ineffective to outright dangerous.
The core problem is that animals process substances in fundamentally different ways than humans do. A medication that relieves your headache without issue can shut down a dog’s kidneys or devastate a cat’s liver. Short videos make medical situations appear tidy and universal when the reality is anything but. Similar symptoms in two different pets can stem from entirely different underlying conditions requiring completely different care.
PDSA vet Catherine Burke warns that following viral tips also delays owners from seeking real veterinary attention, and early treatment can be the difference between a full recovery and a tragic outcome. The good news is that this is entirely preventable. When your pet seems unwell, your first call should always be to your vet, not your phone’s search bar.
Your companion trusts you completely, and that trust is best honored with professional guidance.
