Over 550 men were locked inside flooded cells for five days during Hurricane Helene at Mountain View Correctional Institution, North Carolina. With no access to clean water, food, or communication, they were forced to live among their own waste. One inmate said, “We thought we were going to die there.”
No human—regardless of their sentence—should be abandoned in a disaster zone. The U.S. Department of Justice must implement clear, enforceable emergency protocols for all correctional facilities.
Since then, other prisons have repeated this failure, including some in Florida during Hurricane Milton. This is a growing national crisis, one that disregards basic human rights.
