Donkeys carrying cargo in Oia, Santorini, Greece

Thousands of donkeys and mules are still being exploited on the steep streets of Santorini, despite a 2018 law banning rides for tourists weighing over 220 pounds. Shocking new footage from 2019 and 2022 shows that this law is widely ignored—and nothing has changed. These animals are forced to carry tourists all day in scorching heat, often without adequate water, rest, or shade. This cruel “tradition” must stop.

PETA Germany has filed a criminal complaint, and now it’s time for us to act. The only real solution is a total ban on donkey and mule rides in Santorini.

Tourism should never come at the expense of animal welfare. Speak up for these voiceless animals. Sign the petition now to demand that Greece’s Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, end this cruelty for good. Sign the petition now. Share it. Keep the pressure on.
