An abandoned kitten is reportedly the first to be seen by vets at an animal charity that is neither male nor female. The tabby and white cat named Hope was originally thought to be a female cat, but further examination by the vets found no external sex organs.
Although the vets said that they have seen hermaphrodite cats before, which have both female and male sex organs but they are very rare. Hope, however, has no sex organs, internally or externally.
The senior field veterinary officer Fiona Brockbank with Cats Protection said that she believes it is a case of agenesis. This means that Hope may have failed to develop those organs, which is something she and her colleagues have never seen before.
The charity said that Hope won’t be affected by the condition, and the playful kitten is patiently awaiting adoption at Cats Protection’s Tyneside Adoption Centre.
Hope is 15 weeks old and is described as playful by the staff and volunteers at the Cats Protection center. The Tyneside Adoption Centre manager Beni Benstead said, “Discovering Hope’s special status has been an exciting time as none of us have seen this before or are likely to again.”
