A woman on the beach watched the incident and tried to intervene. When she asked them to stop, they told her to mind her own business and said that they would stop if the good samaritan gave them $1,000. The beachgoer called the beach security and later the police.
When police approached the couple and asked them to leave for breaking the ‘no animals on the beach’ rule, the suspects reportedly resisted arrest and threatened to bite officers.
The horrifying footage shows the couple tossing around the frightened kitten but thankfully, the kitten survived.
Both suspects were released on bond, and the man was charged with two felony counts of battery and attempted battery on a police officer and resisting arrest, while the woman was charged with two misdemeanors: resisting arrest and animal cruelty.
“They were trying to make her swim and the cat was so scared, she was passing out already. She was half alive,” Natalia Martin, who witnessed the event, said.
The kitten was taken to a local animal services facility, where they stayed for two days before being adopted by Martin, the woman who intervened in the incident.
“I took this cat. I adopted her officially two days after this incident,” Martin said.
Animal abuse is more prevalent than many may think. According to PetPedia, every 60 seconds, an animal suffers from abuse, with more than 65 percent being dogs. More than 10 million animals die from abuse every year in the US alone, not including the livestock bred for consumption, who also suffer immense abuse. Animal abuse happens everywhere and is a serious issue. We need more laws to protect animals and hold abusers accountable. Sign this petition to demand all states make all animal abuse a felony now!
