Something remarkable just happened for animals who never asked to spend their lives in a laboratory. Ridglan Farms, a beagle breeding and research facility in Wisconsin that had long drawn the attention of animal rights advocates, is permanently shutting down — and every single dog inside is heading toward a new life.
Lauree Simmons, founder of Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Florida, put it simply at a press conference this week: “Not one dog will remain. No more breeding, no more testing, no more anything.” Those words represent years of relentless effort by countless people who refused to look away.
The road to this moment was not easy. Activists rallied at the facility in the spring, and roughly 1,000 people showed up in April alone in an effort to draw attention to the dogs inside. Twenty-nine people were arrested during that demonstration. Legal advocates sought court protections for the remaining beagles after an earlier agreement transferred 1,500 dogs to rescue organizations. The pressure was sustained, coordinated, and ultimately effective.
According to The Guardian, Big Dog Ranch Rescue struck a final agreement with the facility for its permanent closure, clearing the path for all remaining beagles to be transferred to care. Some will go to partner rescue groups while others will land at Big Dog campuses in Florida and Alabama, where they will be spayed or neutered and made ready for loving homes.
Organizations like PETA see this as more than a single win. It is proof that advocacy works, that a sustained movement can shift what once seemed immovable. The goal now is to keep building on this momentum and push for broader alternatives to animal testing across the board.
For the beagles leaving Ridglan, the world is about to get a whole lot bigger, warmer, and full of the kind of joy they were never given before. That is worth celebrating.
