No conversation about beauty or goth queens is complete without the mention of Kat Von D. The animal activist, fine artist, musician, tattoo artist and outspoken vegan always tells it like it is, no matter the consequences. From brutally honest interviews about her disaffection for the Kardashian sisters to her avid promotion of living a vegan lifestyle, Kat remains a fan favorite celebrity for her true thoughts and activism. Oh, and her fantastically vampy-dark style of course.
After being a vegetarian for life, the starlet stumbled upon the documentary, Forks Over Knives, and became a vegan almost instantly. She told Mercy For Animals, “Veganism changed me. It taught me to look past myself—to consider how my choices affect others—the animals, the people around me, and the planet we live on. To me, veganism is consciousness.”

Kat eats a macrobiotic, vegan diet, which is a diet that focuses on eating local and seasonal foods that balance each other in harmonic ways. Some people follow this diet as a philosophy of life and others follow it for health reasons. After yelling, literally yelling, ‘Good morning, today!’ as her positive morning ritual, she goes to prepare her breakfast. She said she used to adore coffee, but cut it out of her diet. You can drink non-coffee, coffee alternatives in the morning if you want to slowly eliminate coffee from your diet, too! A chai tea, kombucha drink, or black tea will suffice for natural early-morning energy. Here are 8 Drinks, Besides Coffee, That’ll Wake You Up.
Macrobiotics suggests that we choose and prepare food in a manner that serves our health condition and lifestyle. Choosing to live in harmony with nature and realizing that we are part of everything around us is the basic tenet of macrobiotic thinking. Supporters believe that by comprising your diet mostly of grains and vegetables and limiting the number of animal products, your health and happiness will both benefit greatly. They also believe in the Yin of some foods, and the Yang of others; think hot and cold, or passive and aggressive.
Macrobiotic vegan diets do allow for the occasional noodle, pasta, veggie burger and other partially processed grains. So, if you want to eat like Kat, you can still go out with friends and enjoy a heavy, greasy meal.

Kat told The Kit that she enjoys going out to eat from time and time. One of her favorite places is Real Food Daily on La Cienega Boulevard. Their menu includes shakes, smoothies, noodle bowls, veggie tacos, organic coffees, house-made jams and intense veggie burgers. Although her diet is relatively nutrient dense and as healthy as can be, she enjoys a good veggie burger with a side of french fries from time to time. Don’t we all?
You can make your own hearty veggie burgers at home. Try this Red Bean and Mushroom Cheeseburgers recipe, or this Black Bean and Basil Burgers which are perfect for grilling. You can also make this Tempeh Black Bean Burgers With Creamy Dill Sauce or this Black and White Bean Chia Seed Veggie Burgers.
On her Instagram, she posted a photo of a gorgeous plum tart she enjoyed from Floret Vegan Kitchen. If you want to try one for yourself, try making this Easy Plum Cake, this Raw Plum and Prune Cheesecake Tart and these Fruity Pop Tarts.
When it comes to her cruelty beauty like, Kat told Vogue Paris, “Advances in technology now allow us access to ingredients which no longer require animals to suffer or the planet to be exploited and we are lucky to have this choice. I’m not a moral militant, I just want to show people that there are alternatives, there is a choice. As a big fan of make-up, I like to know that I’ve chosen a beauty product knowing everything, rather than buying it because I had to.”
For inspiration, Kat Von D looks to beautiful cities that elicit creative and calm emotions. She listed Edith Piaf as a style icon and believes that makeup can act as the perfect medium for self-expression. In recent news, the star announced her marriage, her pregnancy, and her 40 new vegan lipsticks from her brand, Kat Von D Beauty. As long as this star is alive, she promises to defend animals, shine the light on plant-based living, and stay as authentically cool as she possibly can. And we know that she always will.
