Water wells in the Southwestern United States have reportedly begun to run dry as foreign-owned farms continue to grow crops for cattle overseas, CNN reports.

Workers in the Southwest say that as they began to drill a new well to tap into a water reservoir, they noticed that the water in the aquifer was moving.
Gary Saiter, a resident of Wenden, Arizona, and the head of the Wenden Water Improvement District, said that the moving water is due to a neighboring well that is being used by an alfalfa farm that is run by Al Dahre, a company based out of United Arab Emirates. The crops that are grown there are then sent to feed cattle and other livestock overseas.
Saiter told CNN, “The well guys and I have never seen anything like this before,” adding that the farm was “pumping and it was sucking the water through the aquifer.”
These problems come as the Southwest remains in a drought while the Colorado River Basin, aquifers, and agricultural growth all continue to put a strain on water access.
Cities all over the world, from California to Vietnam, are facing droughts and climate crises. Millions of people are protesting all over the world. Climate change is a top priority for young voters, and we need to care about the Green New Deal.
Climate change leads to extreme weather like droughts, floods, and fires. The single BEST thing you can do to save water is to stop eating meat and all animal products. Growing animals for livestock takes a massive amount of water. It takes nearly 660 gallons of water to just make one burger, which is equivalent to nearly two months of showering for the average person. On the other hand, it takes 1,000 gallons of water to make just one gallon of cow milk.
Studies have shown that eating more plant-based can add over a decade to your lifespan, it can save the world’s forests, it benefits the environment, and it is significantly better for your health! Nations around the world have urged people to eat more plant-based to curb climate change.
