Over 200 elephants and nearly a thousand other animals like zebras and gnus have died in one of the worst droughts that Kenya has seen in decades. According to the country’s tourism minister, the crisis has affected over half of Kenya’s regions. At least four million out of its 50 million people have been affected.

“The drought has caused mortality of wildlife, mostly herbivore species,” Tourism Minister Peninah Malonza said in a press conference.

She added that 14 species, in particular, were identified as being badly hurt by the drought.

“The mortalities have arisen because of depletion of food resources as well as water shortages.”

Officials recorded the death of 205 elephants, 512 gnus, 381 zebras, 12 giraffes, and 51 buffalo between February and October. Four rainy seasons have completely missed Kenya, and over 1.5 million cattle are estimated to have died.

“Elephants in (the) Amboseli and Laikipia-Samburu regions are worst affected by the drought, as the ecosystems (there) have recorded more than 70 elephant deaths,” Malonza said.

Authorities are reportedly dropping off hay for the animals. Sign this petition urging the United Nations to provide humanitarian relief and wildlife assistance for Kenya as quickly as possible.

Climate change leads to extreme weather like droughts, floods, and fires. The single BEST thing you can do to save water is to stop eating meat and all animal products. Growing animals for livestock takes a massive amount of water. It takes nearly 660 gallons of water to make just one burger, which is equivalent to nearly two months of showering for the average person. On the other hand, it takes 1,000 gallons of water to make just one gallon of cow milk.

Studies have shown that eating more plant-based can add over a decade to your lifespan, it can save the world’s forests, it benefits the environment, and it is significantly better for your health! Nations around the world have urged people to eat more plant-based to curb climate change.
