A perfect storm is brewing over the UK’s fuel supply, and climate advocates are urging the government to act before the situation spirals out of control. With rising tensions in the Middle East disrupting oil and gas flows, analysts warn that jet fuel shortages could devastate ordinary families’ summer travel plans while petrol prices soar at the pump. The good news? Solutions already exist, and some of them are refreshingly simple.

Leading environmental groups including Greenpeace and Transport and Environment are calling on UK ministers to get ahead of this energy emergency by reducing demand in a way that prioritizes fairness. Two measures stand out immediately: dropping motorway speed limits by 10mph and placing a temporary ban on non-essential private jet travel. Together, these relatively low-disruption changes could conserve enormous quantities of fuel before rationing becomes unavoidable.

According to Greenpeace, a ban on private jets combined with levies on ultra-frequent flyers and short-haul routes that trains could cover in under six hours would save close to one million tonnes of jet fuel annually, roughly 8% of the UK’s total yearly consumption. A motorway speed reduction alone could preserve nearly half a million additional tonnes of road fuel. These are not radical sacrifices. They are smart, proportionate responses to a crisis that is already squeezing wildlife habitats, inflating food costs, and threatening the ecosystems that sustain us all.

There is also a clear justice dimension here. While working families who have saved all year for a holiday face cancelled flights, the wealthiest individuals continue burning through scarce jet fuel on entirely discretionary trips. A temporary ban on private aviation would protect that hard-earned break for ordinary people while ensuring sacrifice is shared equitably.

Beyond the immediate crisis, campaigners see a deeper opportunity. The UK’s dangerous dependence on volatile fossil fuels demands a faster transition toward electric vehicles and zero-emission aviation. Breaking that dependence is not just an environmental imperative — it is the foundation of genuine energy security.
