Some acts of compassion unfold in the most harrowing of places. While the war in Ukraine continues to devastate communities and displace millions, one dedicated group of rescuers is refusing to abandon the animals caught in the crossfire. Their story is a powerful reminder that mercy does not stop at the edge of a conflict zone.
Paul “Pen” Farthing, a former Royal Marine and founder of the Nowzad charity, recently completed a remarkable mission alongside two vets and a colleague, traveling over 8,000 miles through eastern Ukraine to bring 30 cats and dogs to safety. The team navigated drone strikes and missile fire to reach animals stranded near Kramatorsk, where Russian forces have advanced dangerously close to the city. Each rescued creature represented a life that would otherwise have faced near certain death.
This was not Farthing’s first leap into the unknown for animals in crisis. In 2021, he helped evacuate around 150 animals and 67 Afghan people from Afghanistan as that country fell into chaos. That same fierce commitment carried him into Ukraine, where witnessing the destruction firsthand left him both heartbroken and more determined than ever.
The emotional weight of such work is immense. According to Nowzad, Farthing described feeling deep sadness at the indiscriminate violence unfolding around him and a painful awareness that he could board a plane home while Ukrainians could not. Rather than letting that helplessness become paralysis, his team channeled it into purpose. Grants manager Nina Ley, who was on the ground with him, called this mission only the beginning, with plans already in place to return in June and build more temporary shelter for animals still at risk.
For those watching from a distance, this story is both humbling and galvanizing. The planet’s most vulnerable beings, whether human or animal, deserve advocates willing to show up. Supporting organizations like Nowzad, spreading awareness, or contributing to their fundraising efforts are all meaningful ways to extend the reach of this courageous work. Every donation, every share, every act of solidarity helps bridge the gap between despair and hope.
