Plastic waste is destroying our planet’s ecosystems, harming wildlife, and polluting our oceans. Sadly, the rate of plastic use, at least in the U.S., only seems to be going up each year.

In 2018 alone, people in the U.S. generated an estimated 35.7 million tons of plastic waste – 27 million tons of which ended up in landfills.

While some plastic gets recycled, it’s a small amount and there are some plastics that are deemed unrecyclable, but that’s all about to change.

A startup in Los Angeles, California has come up with a way to turn recyclable and non-recyclable plastic into durable construction blocks, comparable to bricks.

The company, ByFusion, uses machines called Blockers that use steam and compression to transform the plastic waste into ByBlocks, or plastic building blocks.

According to ByFusion, the blocks they create don’t crack or crumble the way concrete blocks do and they produce 41% fewer greenhouse gas emissions when compared with concrete blocks.

Not only are they more durable and more eco-friendly, but the production of the blocks also creates zero waste and doesn’t use glue or adhesives to stick the material together.

So far, the company has recycled 103 tons of plastic and hopes to recycle 100 million tons by 2030. Their mission is to sell Blocker machines to cities across the U.S. and the world to reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills and oceans.
