According to news shared with One Green Planet, Dove announced they will move to 100% recycled plastic bottles in its Dove, Dove Men+Care and Baby Dove brands by the close of 2019. The company will also make beauty bar soap single packs plastic free by 2020 and the company is working on stainless steel, refillable deodorants.

This move will reduce virgin plastic by 20,500 tons annually, Dove told One Green Planet. This new reduction is part of a global initiative by the company to reduce plastic. Called its No Better Less Plastic framework, Unilever has committed to:

No Plastic by eliminating plastic when possible, turning to alternatives or removing plastic all together. Better Plastic means reduction in virgin plastic and focus on recycled plastics instead. Less Plastic is refillable or reusable technologies, including deodorants.

Dove and Unilever have partnered with LOOP, a refillable direct to consumer system, as part of this initiative.

The above initiatives by Dove will contribute to Unilever’s plastic commitments, including halving virgin plastic and collecting and processing more plastic than it sells. Dove is removing enough virgin plastic from its products to circle the earth 2.7 times.

The plastic problem is driven partly by a “single-use” model, whereby a plastic item is used once and then thrown away. In Dove’s new initiative, the company hopes to reduce that model of plastic use and move into a more sustainable system for plastics, the company told One Green Planet .
