Google announced an $150 million investment in renewable energy products on October 15 at its Made by Google event in New York City. Earlier this year, in August, the company shared its pledge that by 2022 all Made by Google products would include recycled materials.
“Made by Google” products include phones, laptops, tablets, gaming devices and “connected home,” including the Nest. Every Nest product sold in 2019 will include recycled plastics, according to an announcement by Google head designer Ivy Ross.
Many of these products have plastic components and are plastic intensive. The Nest Mini speaker will be made of 100% recycled plastic bottles. According to the company, one recycled bottle is enough plastic to cover two Google Home minis. The company also tweeted that all shipping for Made by Google products is carbon neutral.
Head designer Ivy Ross spoke about sustainability and design, saying, “At its core, design is about solving problems for people and the world’s challenges. And sustainability is one of the most fundamental challenges of our generation. When you look at how things are made today, it just doesn’t make sense. Manufactured with dirty energy from rapidly depleted precious minerals, to make something that becomes obsolete in a short time and then thrown away.”
Google has been working on sustainability for years. The company has been focused on internal measures and is now continuing its commitments with product designs.
