What it Would Look Like if We Cared About the Planet Like We Care About These Things

When was the last time that you saw a group of people flooding into a stadium or huddling around a television to watch a debate on climate change? When was the last time you heard someone gossiping about the ridiculous amount of plastic pollution there is in the ocean? Uh, chances are … never. We get it. Even as die-hard lovers of the environment, we admit, we don’t always get as excited about the introduction of a new national carbon tax as we do, say, for any news related to Norman Reedus.

But what if we did? Mother Nature is a pretty cool chick after all. It’s easy to get bogged down with all the negative news that makes the papers involving the planet. So, it is even more important to remember why protecting the planet is so important in the first place. First and foremost, because nature is really awesome. If you haven’t experienced what it’s like to stand in the middle of forest and observe all the small, gorgeous details of the trees, or to stand on the top of a mountain and see nothing but valleys and rivers for miles – frankly, you haven’t lived.

Getting bored listening to climate policy debates is not hard. But, remember that those stuffy people in suits are delivering painful dull speeches all in the defense of this wild, fantastic place we call home. So, in an effort to bring the excitement and passion to the environmental movement – let’s break out of the mold and take a look what showing we care about the planet SHOULD look like!

1. We’d cheer for the planet like sports fans.

Total foul on the play, palm oil companies and cattle ranchers! You are completely offsides exploiting forests in Indonesia for American snack foods. The ref must be totally blind for missing a chunk of cleared rainforest the three times the size of California!

2. Kim K would take selfies with environmental rock stars … like Bill McKibben.

“About last night … #blessed #Eaarth” The photo gets over 3,000 likes on Instagram in less than five minutes. Dash stores start carrying a versatile-fleece line that donates the profits to 350.org.

3. Our favorite TV shows would feature real victims and climate criminals.

The latest plot twist in features the victim – the lover of this polar bear – the team sets to work finding the oil company culpable for this vicious crime.

4. Eco-label envy would replace brand names.

This seasons line is made of 100 percent bio-based canvas. When next seasons’ totes hit the stores, this one can be responsibly composted in your back yard!

5. We’d devote billboards to eco-conscious actions instead of advertisements.

We know, we know – you were recycling even before it was cool. Now all your friends are all asking where you recycle and what resin codes you sort … don’t even get us started on their new obsession red wiggler worms for composting …

6. We’d be engrossed with nature … instead of their phones.

Remember the dangers of texting and walking? Such a thing of the past. Instead of checking Facebook feeds or texting about the awkward run-in you just had – you’ve got nature on the brain. We still advise against thinking about nature and driving though … dangerous game.

Well, it might be a long time until these become reality … but as long as we keep spreading the word about how cool being environmental conscious is, it’s bound to catch on!
