A fin whale, which weighed 15 tonnes and was 19 meters long, died after reportedly getting beached due to an injury.
Jacky Karpouzopoulos of the CMNF animal protection group, said, “It is a female, about 30 years old, who ran aground on Saturday. She was sick, but she reached the port of Calais still alive, then she went too close to the rocks, and she ran aground.”
How the whale was injured is still a mystery. Hopefully, the autopsy will provide more information. It will have to be done on the beach as the whale is much too large to transport.
Fin whales are the second largest whale species next to the blue whale and are enlisted as being an endangered species. Many whale species live in French waters, and a humpback whale was also discovered washed up on land earlier this year.
It is sad that this whale’s story had to end this way, especially when the fin whale population is so delicate. Many whales are on the brink of extinction, which is why we must take action now to protect them from pollution, Climate change, fishing gear, and whale hunting.
