In 2016, an estimated fifty-four Humpback Whales were entangled in fishing nets, many of whom likely died of starvation, infections, and respiratory issues as a result. Unfortunately, so many animals suffer this fate as a result of the fishing industry. Animals like Vaquitas and certain species of dolphins are nearing extinction because so many of them are victims of the fishing industry’s “bycatch.” Luckily, there are some wonderful humans who care about marine animals and do their best to save them. Here’s one example!
In the Gulf of California, a humpback whale got stuck in a fishing net and couldn’t get herself free. A rescue team from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society arrived to assess the situation and help her get untangled. They cut certain parts of the net, but a large portion of it was wrapped around her nose. It took them four hours, but they finally set her free! The team celebrated as the whale swam away, uninhibited by a fishing net.
Whales are magnificent creatures that deserve to swim without fear of getting entangled in gillnets or ghost nets. Sign this petition to ban gillnets, so that marine animals don’t get caught in them!
