Paris Moulin Rouge Cabaret Club Forced to Stop Cruel Underwater Act That Exploits Live Snakes

Moulin Rouge cabaret club in Paris has been forced to stop a long-time act in which terrestrial snakes are plunged into a water tank while a dancer swims around them. The act has been faced with outrage and street protests by Animal rights groups.

The tourist-based cabaret club was founded in 1889 and was strongly fighting back against Animal rights activists, saying that they would continue to use them until 2024, which is the date they decided to end all performances involving live animals.

However, as the protests outside and petitions continued to grow, the Paris city hall warned against the use of terrestrial snakes in an underwater act. Finally, this week the club issues a statement announcing “the permanent end of the snakes number as of today”.

The club used south-east Asian reticulated and Indian pythons in the act, which are both protected and live on land. While these animals have been seen swimming in the wild, animal activists said that they had seen the shakes trying to keep their heads above the water during the show at Moulin Rouge. They also reportedly said that snakes had been muzzled with tape to stop them from biting, and they had also been taped to stop them from defecating in the tank. The decision to immediately stop the use of live snakes in their show was met with cheers from animal activists.
