Fox’s new sitcom starring Joel McHale follows a team of animal-control officers who go to help out on various animal calls that the department receives. These range from bunnies on drugs to people being chased by ostriches.
PETA released a statement claiming the series is exploiting animals by featuring live ostriches, dogs, and a ferret in its first episode. The organization also noted that the show teased that a bear would make an appearance in the coming episodes.
“Animal Control is a sickening soup of animal exploitation that has PETA questioning whether Joel McHale’s been living under a rock,” said PETA Foundation Director of Captive Animal Welfare Debbie Metzler. “He either doesn’t know or doesn’t care that it’s 2023 and that CGI, VFX, and other humane forms of technology should be used, instead of dragging abused animals onto TV and film sets.”
PETA’s previous undercover investigations and law-enforcement probes into animal suppliers for the film and TV industries have documented animals being whipped and kept in horrible conditions. They are typically separated from their mothers prematurely, and handlers use violent training techniques behind the scenes to force them to act on cue, according to PETA.
Metzler added, “Read the room, Joel McFail: Animals aren’t the key to your comeback, and neither is this sad show.”
We can help these animals by not supporting the businesses that exploit them. Refrain from buying tickets to circuses, zoos, or movies that use wild animals. This will leave these companies with less financial Support to keep their cruel practices going. Today’s special effects and simulations provide the same visual experience as watching an animal on screen or stage without the involvement of cruelty or captivity. The film “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” wowed movie-goers with incredible computer-generated imagery (CGI) and considering the film brought in $100 million during opening weekend in the U.S. alone, we think audiences and producers would agree.
