In recent years, plant-based meat alternatives have certainly improved. Products created by companies like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods rival actual meat. Even egg alternatives have gone to a new level, just look at the JUST egg. But there are some things that are naturally more difficult to make very similar to the real thing. Pork (which Impossible Foods is working on) and seafood are examples of that. There are some tuna alternatives out there like Tuno and Good Catch, but there’s no shredded salmon. Or at least there wasn’t until now.
Swedish tech startup, Hooked are changing the game. They’ve created a plant-based tuna alternative as well as shredded salmon. They are made with soy protein, seaweed, and algae oil. They also plan to eventually create vegan calamari and shrimp!
Hooked founders Emil Wasteson and Tom Johansson told FoodNavigator: “the current seafood industry is environmentally unsustainable, and that seafood consists of more toxins than ever before… Demand is growing for seafood, what is [compromised] is the health of the animals and the planet.”
They will be launching the tuna first and then the shredded salmon. They mainly hope to disrupt the growing demand for seafood in Europe, but if all goes well (and we do wish them well), maybe we’ll see these products in the U.S. and other countries too!
