Zoogoer Throws Water Bottle at Captive Chimpanzee and the Animal Strikes Back

A tourist at a zoo threw a water bottle at a captive chimpanzee provoking the animal to strike back at the zoogoers.

Footage shows a man throwing a plastic water bottle into a chimpanzee enclose at Changsha Ecological Zoo in southern China last week. The chimpanzee, Diu Na Xing, saw the bottle after it was thrown into his enclosure and he grabbed the bottle and started hitting it on the ground before throwing it back into the tour of loud and obnoxious tourists.

The chimpanzee threw the water bottle, which hit a girl’s phone who was recording her eyebrow was reportedly bleeding, and her phone screen was also cracked. Tourists were reportedly advised not to tease the chimp but did so anyways. The Changsha Ecological Zoo’s publicity department said they will enhance the inspection at the enclosure.

Animals don’t belong in captivity, but zoos and other animal attractions will continue to operate as long as people are paying to visit them. Instead of visiting a for-profit zoo, visit a reputable animal sanctuary or wildlife preserve that aims to protect animals and their habitats. Volunteering with an organization focused on protecting natural habitats is also a great way to help animals, instead of supporting places that keep animals captive.
